Play Piano Online

Learn How to Play the Piano Online

There are so many sites out there...

...promising to teach you to play piano online.

How do you weed your way through the sales hype?

Find something that will truly work for you?

How can you be sure to get quality instruction?

Even better, what online piano instruction can you find for free?

The best way to start learning online is to decide exactly what you're looking for. A specific search, rather than just looking for online lessons, will shave hours off of your research time!

Play piano online...
what are you looking for?

So begin by asking yourself some questions about what format you'd like your lessons to be in.

Are you looking for:

  • printable piano lessons?
  • piano lessons on DVD?
  • online lessons that you can access right away?
  • video or audio piano lessons?

By knowing what you want, you can narrow down your searches and choices.

Play piano online...
find your style!

What style of music would you most like to play?

Learning to play piano online, and searching for the right lessons, gets a lot easier when you can narrow down your choices by style.

Are you interested in jazz piano lessons online? Or maybe blues piano lessons online?

Maybe just flat out beginner piano lessons? Check out Go Piano.

You might want to learn to play piano by chords, or how to play the piano by ear.

Or, you maybe you'd love to play new age piano. Check out Quiescence Music.

Maybe you're just looking for some piano basics to get started playing right away.

Whatever style you want to learn is available for you online. Isn't the internet great? ;-)

Play piano online...
start with the freebies!

Obviously, many people start out searching for free piano lessons online.

Even with that search, you'll find a lot of sites that have piano courses for sale. They might be courses on DVD, or lessons that are online that you pay a fee to log in to. And most folks selling lessons understand that you don't want to just hand someone money for a course you know nothing about!

So - most places offer you a newsletter, e-zine, or a small selection of free courses to "try out" the teaching methods they use. Take advantage of these freebies! They're often full of valuable lessons, tips, and other resources. And lots of times, discounts for the corresponding courses -- to use if you're really happy with the freebies.

Here's some good freebies:

Make sure you read the privacy policies on any site you're giving your email to. Most business people on the web hate spam as much as you do, so they don't sell or give emails out to anyone (me included). To be extra safe, sign up for a free email at Yahoo! or MSN (Hotmail), and use it just for your free piano lessons and newsletters.

You can learn for months, even years, with freebies!

Play piano online...
tips for success!

Learning to play piano online, at home, does require some dedication!

Being a very self-motivated person helps. You're going to be your own teacher, motivator, and cheerleader. It's up to you how often, how much, and just plain how you practice.

Can you put in some practice time even on days when piano doesn't feel like fun at all? Enlist your family and friends to help you stay on track towards your goal of learning to play.

Schedule time for your piano lessons just as if you were going to a lesson with a teacher. A regular schedule will help make learning piano part of your lifestyle. Otherwise, piano might fall to the bottom of your to-do list when life gets crazy (as it always does).

Take the time to really absorb new learning. As a teacher, the biggest mistake I see happening with my students is that they're in too much of a hurry! We are creatures who learn from time and repetition, so use that to your advantage.

Repeating new learning (practice) over time (daily) will have you playing better much more quickly than trying to learn something new every day.

Make practicing fun. Clean and decorate your piano practice room so that it's a space you love to hang out in.

And finally...

Learning to play the piano online (or with a teacher) is a journey, not a destination. Sound too simple? Well, it's really true.

The more you can enjoy and celebrate each step you take, each new song you can play, and each victory at the piano, the further you'll go.

Enjoy the music you can create, from the simplest one-hand melody to the most challenging piece you're learning. From the moment your finger touches a key, you are playing the piano!
